Brain Like a Sieve

Oh, the shame!

At 5:00pm today, I headed out with a few of the girls from work to celebrate our workmate's hen night. She's having a grand total of six hen nights in the run-up to her wedding, so this one wasn't intended to be a wild one. We spent five hours eating, drinking and chatting; celebrating both the end of the week and the fast-approaching wedding.

Only when I was getting up to leave did a guy from the next table along look at me and smile. Now, I did question it for a moment, because he gave me one of those beer goggle stares, and for a moment I could have sworn he was about to wink at me. But then he cleared his throat and said "we went to school together".

You can imagine my surprise. Not only was he coherent; he was saying he knew me. I managed to reply, "did we?"

I think he laughed, and then he said my name. Damn. This guy must really know me; but who the hell is he?!

Now, I'm not the type of person to go along and pretend I know who they are, and before I could think about it, I asked him his name; admitting I had no idea who he was.

At this point I feel it's fair to mention that I went to a number of different schools when I was growing up. In fact, I think it was six - not that that's an excuse!

He was polite (and probably assumed I was far more hammered than I actually was), and humoured me enough to tell me his name was Joe.

Now the cogs in my brain are working overtime. Joe, Joe... Joey, Josiah, Joseph... It must have been Joseph.

And then it hit me. Of course! This guy was in my class (grade); I sat next to him for a year - how could I have not recognised him before?! Honestly, brain; you're failing me in my old age.

I'm only 24.

I made up for it by mentioning that I'd heard that he was running a bar somewhere. I don't think I got away with it, but it was worth a shot. He probably went away thinking I would have spoken to a lamp post if it had claimed it knew me.

Oh, and note to self: Guys from school seem to be really hot these days...
